Game Type:

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a combat flight action video game.

Combat flight simulators are simulation video games (similar to amateur flight simulation software) used to simulate military aircraft and their operations. These are distinct from dedicated flight simulators used for professional pilot and military flight training which consist of realistic physical recreations of the actual aircraft cockpit, often with a full-motion platform.

The action game is a video game genre that emphasizes physical challenges, including hand–eye coordination and reaction-time. The genre includes a large variety of sub-genres, such as fighting games, beat ’em ups, shooter games and platform games. Some multiplayer online battle arena and real-time strategy games are also considered action games.

Game play:

In this game at first you are gonna drive jet as the place is in chaos so by this your game tutorial starts. At first you will need to go with the basics of the plane and how to use a radar. After all of this you will destroy some more jets to complete your tutorial. After the tutorials the mechanics of the game are followed as,

  1. Core Mechanics

  2. Customization

  3. VR gameplay

  4. Multiplayer

  5. List of characters in the game

Core Mechanics:

The flight model in Ace Combat 7 will feel like Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War and Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War. The HUDwill be very reminiscent of Ace Combat Infinity. Flares will return for player control from Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. Checkpoints will also return, allowing players to restart a mission from a particular checkpoint if they die in the middle of a mission.

Clouds will play a major role in gameplay for the first time in the franchise. Units inside of clouds, including the player, will gain stealthbut lose visibility. The player will risk crashing into other aircraft and the terrain. The player’s plane will also ice and stall if they stay in cloud cover for too long. In addition to clouds, direct lightning strikes will interfere with the player’s flight control and fire-control system, and distort the HUD. Helicopters and Piston Fighters will not make an appearance in Ace Combat 7. The game will only focus on fighter jets. The player can also manually perform Post Stall Maneuvers. If successful, the player can get behind an enemy aircraft and turn a dogfight in their favor. This mechanic replaces the automatic Close Range Assault counter-maneuvers from Assault Horizon.

Customization:

The Aircraft Tree from Ace Combat Infinity returns to Ace Combat 7. Players can purchase aircraft, special weapons, and tuning parts within the tree by spending MRP (Military Result Points), an in-game currency; that can be earned by completing campaign missions or multiplayer matches. Like in Ace Combat X, Joint Assault, Assault Horizon Legacy, and Infinity, aircraft can be tuned via Hangar. Players can equip tuning parts which can enhance aircraft and special weapons performances; or adding special features to aircraft itself, such as stealth capability, health regeneration, anti-icing, and more. Players can also change aircraft skin and equip emblems on aircraft body, wings, and tails with no additional effects to the aircraft.

The Aircraft Set system from Infinity also returns in Ace Combat 7. Players can create custom sets of an aircraft, skin, emblem, nickname, and tuning parts for repeated use in future missions.

Virtual Reality:

Ace Combat 7 features optional virtual reality support exclusively through PlayStation VR on PS4. The game’s main VR content is an exclusive set of three missions separate from the main campaign. Players cannot play these VR missions without PlayStation VR, but VR is not available for the main campaign or multiplayer. The VR missions sacrifice some visual detail to maintain the required 60 frames-per-second.

When playing in VR, the player must use cockpit view; first-person and third-person views are not available. The player can turn their head to look at an enemy to lock on to them, at which point they can fire missiles as usual. Holding down the Options button will recalibrate the headset. The player can look down and see the entire cockpit, including the pilot’s legs. The in-game pilot will interact with the plane’s control sticks, despite the player’s use of a DualShock 4 controller.

“Virtual reality really gives you that illusion, it tricks your brain really, that you are inside this jet, and the level of immersion is unparalleled to any past experiences you do through a screen interface.”

― Kazutoki Kono on the VR Mode

VR Mode is a collection of gameplay modes in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown that support virtual reality headsets. It includes a set of three exclusive missions, an airshow mode, Free Flight, and the hangar. The player assumes the role of Mobius 1 while in VR Mode.

VR Mode was made available on the PlayStation 4 version of Ace Combat 7 upon release in January 2019. It will remain exclusive to PlayStation for one year until January 18, 2020. The player can use any controls compatible with the main game for VR Mode, including flight sticks.

AirCrafts:

VR Mode only supports a small number of aircraft since each one is completely rebuilt specifically for virtual reality. These aircraft feature high-quality model textures and fully working cockpits. Before each mission, the player selects and views their aircraft in a hangar modeled after the Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies hangar. Each aircraft also comes with the same three special weapons available in the non-VR gameplay modes. The F/A-18F is unlocked by default. Completing a total of three VR missions unlocks the Su-30M2. Completing a total of five VR missions unlocks the A-10C, and a total of ten VR missions unlocks the F-22A. All aircraft are unlocked with one special weapon, and completing missions with a specific aircraft will unlock its other weapons. Completing one mission unlocks the second weapon, and completing two missions unlocks the third weapon.

VR Missions:

VR Mode includes three exclusive missions that must be completed in sequence. These missions feature a small variety of Ace Combat mission types. VR Mission 01 is a standard bomber defense mission where the player must shoot down all incoming bombers and escorts. VR Mission 02 involves an aerial dogfight followed by defending allies from enemy ground troops. VR Mission 03 is a dogfight mission over a cloudy mountain landscape with a “boss battle” at the end. The player can choose a mission difficulty prior to entering the mission menu. At first, the player can only choose between EASY, NORMAL, and HARD difficulties. Completing all three missions on HARD difficulty unlocks a fourth, ACE difficulty. The player also earns a Clear Rank at the end of each mission depending on how much time they spent to complete the mission, with S rank being the highest possible rank.

There are some types of plays listed here availalble in VR such as,

  1. Free Flight

  2. Air Show Mode

Free flight:

As in the main campaign, VR Mode allows players to perform Free Flight over the three VR Mission areas. These are Fort Grays Island, the Scofields Plateau, and the Waiapolo Mountains. Players have at most 30 minutes to spend in Free Flight, at which point the mission ends. Mission background music does not play while in Free Flight, and there are no radio communications.

Air Show mode:

VR Mode’s Airshow Mode allows players to stand on the deck of the Albatross and watch Omega Squadron perform various aerial maneuvers. The player can change their position on the carrier, direct the airshow by ordering the squadron to perform specific maneuvers, and activate or deactivate classic Ace Combat 2 music playing from the carrier’s speakers.

Multiplayer:

Ace Combat 7 features two online multiplayer modes at launch, Battle Royal and Team Deathmatch. In Battle Royal, players engage in a free-for-all deathmatch until the timer runs out, where the player with the most points wins. In Team Deathmatch, two teams must shoot each other down until the timer runs out or when one team reaches the score limit. Both modes support up to 8 players at once.

  1. Callsign Trigger (real name unknown) is the player character and the primary protagonist of the game. Clown signed him on to fill an empty spot in Mage Squadron, but Trigger shows true combat potential throughout the conflict.

  2. Avril Mead is a mechanic imprisoned at the 444th Air Base. She earns the nickname “Scrap Queen” for being able to repair aircraft scraps to make them fully combat-effective. She later joins the force at Tyler Island and leads the refugees into fighting the radical Erusean forces and disabling the space elevator.

  3. Mihaly A. Shilage is an Erusean Air Force ace pilot and the flight lead of Sol Squadron. His combat data is being used to develop drone technology and maneuvers. He was once the heir to the Grand Duchy of Shilage, but joined the Erusean military after Erusea annexed Shilage.

  4. Dr. Schroeder is a Gründer Industries chief researcher working for the Erusean military and the EASA. He leads the drone development effort with Mihaly.

  5. Princess Rosa Cossette D’Elise is the Princess of Erusea during the war, which her father initiated. She was convinced that the International Space Elevator was Osea’s way of interfering with Usea and especially Erusea.

Storyline:

The game takes place in the same fictional universe as the previous numbered games in the series. Following the events of Ace Combat 04 and Ace Combat 5, the Osean Federation brokered peace between the military power of Erusea and the rest of the Usean continent. The IUN was formed to maintain peace across the Usean continent, while former President Vincent Harling orders a space elevator funded off the Erusean coast in order to revitalize the continent’s economy. However, the space elevator creates resentment among the Eruseans, who see it as unnecessary Osean intervention.

Rising tensions between the Osean Federation and the Kingdom of Erusea culminates when Erusea declares war on Osea. The Eruseans then proceed to launch a surprise attack using a massive number of UAVs against military targets from Osea and the IUN Peacekeeping Forces (IUN-PKF). They also manage to capture most of the continent including the International Space Elevator. Avril Mead, an Osean aircraft mechanic, is shot down by an Erusean fighter while flying an old fighter jet she restored. She survived, but is arrested and sentenced to forced labour at the Osean Air Defense Force’s 444th Air Base. Meanwhile, the player, callsign “Trigger”, is an Osean IUN-PKF pilot of Mage Squadron fighting back the Erusean invasion. In a mission to evacuate Harling, who was trapped in the Space Elevator, an Osean missile hits Harling’s aircraft, killing him. Trigger, who was the closest, is suspected to be the one who had fired it. He is then court-martialled for murder, and transferred to Spare Squadron, a penal military unit also stationed at the 444th Air Base. The Spare Squadron is sent to several dangerous missions, including an encounter with Mihaly A. Shilage, an Erusean ace pilot. For his commendable performances under Spare Squadron, Trigger is eventually allowed to return to the military. He is assigned to the Osean Air Force’s Long Range Strategic Strike Group (LRSSG), leading the Strider squadron. The Osean forces, assisted by the LRSSG, mounts a series of counter-offensives which ends in the capture of the Erusean capital, Farbanti. However, as the Oseans capture Farbanti, both the Osean and Erusean forces shoot down all military satellites under each other’s control, disrupting all communications and crippling the chain of command of both countries. In the resulting chaos, dissident Erusean forces start revolts against their government, while penal units from Osea also take the chance to desert, spreading conflict around the continent.

Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, Avril encounters Rosa Cossette D’Elise, Princess of Erusea, who regrets having supported the war, while the Strider Squadron learns from an Erusean officer that the drone technology that gave them the upper hand during the beginning of the war was provided by Belka, and that they hacked the Osean IFF system during the mission to rescue Harling, which caused his death, proving Trigger’s innocence. Avril and Rosa eventually confront Doctor Schroeder, the Belkan scientist responsible for the Erusean drones. Schroeder, disillusioned by the destruction and suffering his drones have caused, tells them that the drones are equipped with a special flight program based on Mihaly’s flight data, and that there are several automated drone factories around Erusea, powered by energy from the space elevator. Upon learning this, the Osean forces, supported by friendly Erusean defectors, launch an attack to seize the elevator, but are stopped midway by two advanced drones programmed with the latest version of Schroeder’s flight program. After retreating to a nearby abandoned carrier, Trigger, accompanied by a few other Osean and Erusean aces, head back to the elevator to confront the drones. One of them is shot down, but the other escapes through a tunnel leading to the space elevator’s base. To prevent the flight data from the battle being uploaded to the drone factories, which could further increase the combat abilities of their units, Trigger chases after it and destroys it, before flying all the way through the elevator’s structure to escape to safety. The war officially ends, and refugees gather around the space elevator, with Rosa using her influence to call upon other nations to provide relief. Mihaly, despite surviving his final confrontation with Trigger, was left crippled and unable to take to the skies ever again. As the continent starts to recover, Avril reminisces about the conflict, and about how Trigger was crucial in bringing it to end.
