Christmas Quiz 2017

It’s early December and for the past three years, I have produced a Christmas quiz template that can be used for the holiday season. This year is no different.

What’s new

Last year, I released a present themed version of the Christmas quiz. This year, I wanted to change the design and use the image of Santa clause.

However, the

game also incorporates icons and design elements from previous versions and other PowerPoint games.

I didn’t want students to lose any points. That doesn’t really seem in the Christmas spirit, so similar to the Mystery Squares game, there are different icons with different values. That way Santa always leaves a gift.

Christmas Quiz 2017 - Menu Board

If students click on an image of a Santa and answer the question correctly, they are given the points associated with the gift.

A star is worth 3 points, a gold present is worth 2 points and a red present is worth 1 point.

Like Mystery Squares, the students don’t know where the higher value icons are, so this means that the higher-level or more confident students won’t dominate the game.

The template contains a total of 27 slides – a title slide, a rules slide, a menu board and 24 question slides. The questions are not provided, and they have to be added by the teacher before playing the game in the classroom.

The type of questions used is determined by the teacher. They do not have to be Christmas themed. They can be based on the target language that the students have been studying during the course.

  1. Download an open the template.

  2. Add a question an answer to each of the 24 question slides.

  3. Save the template.

Playing the Christmas Quiz

Watch the tutorial video below or read through the notes for information on how to use the template.

Video tutorial on how to edit the template. The video run-time is 1 minute and 40 seconds.

  1. Divide your class into groups of 4-6 students. Each group represents a team in the Christmas quiz.

  2. Ask each of the groups to choose a team name. I recommend using Christmas themed vocabulary. (Elves, Reindeer, Snowmen, Stars etc.)

  3. The teams should use a signal or a buzzer sound.

  4. Write the team names on the board or a piece of paper to help you keep track of points.

  5. Start the PowerPoint presentation.

  6. Left-click anywhere on the title slide to move to the next slide.

  7. After the title slide is the rules slide. While the rules slide doesn’t explain the game in detail, it does show the students the different icons and how many points each icon is worth.

  8. Once you have explained the game, click anywhere on the rules slide to show the menu board. You may want to do a couple of practice questions model the activity in more detail.

  9. Choose a team at random. You may choose to use a random number generator, cards, a dice, or even choose the team name that is the first alphabetically.

  10. Ask the students to choose a Santa.

  11. Click on the chosen Santa to reveal the question.

  12. Read the question out to all the students.

  13. The first team to buzz in can answer the question.

  14. If the students answer incorrectly, allow the other teams to answer question.

  15. If the students answer correctly, click on the blank answer box to reveal and confirm the answer. After the students have been shown the answer, click on the back button to return to the menu slide.

  16. When you return to the menu slide, the image of Santa will disappear and a present will be left behind. The present will tell you how many points the team have won for the correct answer.

  17. Allow the team who answered the question correctly to choose the next Santa.

  18. As before, click on the chosen Santa to reveal the question and read the question out to all the students.

  19. The first team to buzz in can answer the question.

  20. Repeat until all the questions have been answered or the activity ends.
