Introduction:
Then, there was fire. Re-experience the critically acclaimed, genre-defining game that started it all. Beautifully remastered, return to Lordran in stunning high-definition detail running at 60 Fps.
Game Type:
Dark Souls is an action role-playing game.
Action role-playing video games (abbreviated action RPG or ARPG) are a subgenre of role-playing video games. The games emphasize real-time combat where the player has direct control over the characters as opposed to turn or menu-based combat. These games often use action game combat systems similar to hack and slash or shooter games. Action role-playing games may also incorporate action-adventure games, which include a mission system and RPG mechanics, or massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) with real-time combat systems.
Game play:
The game revolves around the appearance of the Undead, that will gradually ruin this world. The game world of medieval fantasy is represented in three main themes: “King and Knight”, “Death and the Abyss,” “Flame of Chaos”. Exploration of the world will be vital and, thanks to a seamless map, accessible by simply walking. No maps in hand, the player will have to rely on descriptions and observation. The game will feature complex environments, with tricks, traps and significant height differences. Bonfires scattered throughout the world will serve as starting points/checkpoints and as oases for recovery. The player will be able to rest by the bonfire to replenish health, Estus and spells.
Humanity is another new concept, and is represented by a number in the top left corner of the HUD, it controls various aspects of the game. Most importantly, it is used to revive from Undead to Human, and to strengthen Bonfires. A Human player can summon Undead players, but will also be open to invasions. The game will feature different motions and traits for weapons, as well as a great variety of magic and items, encouraging the player to find their own and unique play style. The motion will affect the speed and rest of each blow, based on parameters such as the player’s strength and ability. Tactics such as bypass armor should also be parameter-dependent.
The expected playtime is 1.5 or 2 times that of Demon’s Souls, with a significant increase in weapons, armor, magic and items. Whilst Demon’s Souls had 40 types of enemies, Dark Souls will include close to 100 of them. Enemies will be able to chase players up stairs and ladders, but can be kicked down. Story will not impose itself upon the player, but it is present. The game world is fragmented, but opportunities for deeper story information are available to players who search. Takes place in the fictional land of Lordran.
Notable Differences With Demons Souls:
All defense has been lowered, and attack power has increased, hence the introduction of the Iron Flesh magic. No more munching on grass. Grass has been removed and instead Estus can be collected at the fires and carried in bottles. However the amount of bottles a player can carry will be limited. They want to discourage reckless play followed by munching, and instead ask the player to tread with caution. The player will be able to choose a starting gift at character creation. No Soul Form, instead you switch between a ‘human’ form and a ‘hollowed’ form. World Tendency is not present as a server median, but a similar effect can be controlled by players online. See the Online section for more information. The Story and World are not that of Demon’s Souls. See the Lore page for more information.
There won’t be 5 differentiated worlds as presented in Demon’s Souls. See the Places page for more information. The weapon upgrade system will be easier to understand and there are armor upgrades available. High degree of difficulty. The objective is to give players a challenge that is rewarding when met. Difficulty is something anyone can overcome through observation, strategy and choice. Aiming to provide freedom for the player character.
Demon’s Souls’ “learn from your mistakes” theme remains the base for the game. Implementation of a seamless map, that was not realized in Demon’s Souls. The analogy for the game is: “Something spicy, but that anyone can enjoy”. Whilst happy that the game had international appeal, no special intentions to cater to their tastes. From Software does not feel confident designing based on market data, so they will instead compete by creating a great game. Players will die repeatedly, From Software bets its pride on it.
Artorias of the Abyss:
Artorias of the Abyss is an expansion pack for Dark Souls, first made available as included in the PC version, Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition, on August 24 2012. This content adds a sideplot to the original Dark Souls story that sends the Chosen Undead back in time to Oolacile, chronicling the legend of the Abysswalker, Knight Artorias. New Locations, Enemies and Items are available, as well as an Arena Mode for more competitive Player versus Player online play. This expansion also serves as a new Patch, changing or fixing many elements of the console versions of Dark Souls.
Characters:
Classes:
Classes in Dark Souls determine the starting Stats and Equipment of the player. There are 10 Classes in Dark Souls that the player can begin the game with. They are listed below:
Classes do not determine what weapons, items, armor, or spells your character is able to use, they only determine what your character starts the game with. As you progress through the game and raise your levels, your character can potentially take up any role regardless of class. In addition to choosing a class, players can choose a gift to begin the game with. All gifts can be found in the game later on, but taking one here can let the player enjoy a benefit they wouldn’t normally have until much later. A first time player should be careful about choosing gifts that will let them enter end-game areas from the start of the game such as the Master Key, since they could potentially end up stranded in a very difficult area without the knowledge or equipment to get back out. Note that the Master Key is infinitely reusable, and the Thief starting class begins the game with one already. Taking a second Master Key as a Thief is a waste of a gift.
The cost of raising a level increases as your character’s level increases. The amount of souls each level costs is the same for all classes, though classes begin at different levels. For example, a character that starts at level 1 may find leveling up to be extremely affordable, but the character who starts at level 10 didn’t have to pay anything to get to that point. When the level 1 character reaches level 10, going from 10 to level 11 will cost exactly the same amount of souls as it would for the character who started at level 10. Because of this, starting at a lower level actually ends up costing more overall, however the player will be able to put their stats exactly where they want them instead of starting with a more pre-determined kit. The starting level of a character ignores the Resistance stat, so characters with high resistance start at lower levels than they would normally have otherwise.
There are exactly 10 of the classes and their names including detail are described below,
Warrior
Knight
Wanderer
Thief
Bandit
Hunter
Soccer
Pyromancer
Cleric
Deprived
Warrior: Warrior is the starting class of Dark Souls,
Fearless warrior. Weapon expert. High strength, dexterity.
The Warrior starts with one of the better shields in the game, and high enough stats to use many decent weapons right away. It’s a good class for people who want to jump right into the game with weapons and melee. While it is less optimal for pure Strength builds than the Bandit early on, it is actually better for pure Dexterity builds than the classes that start with high Dexterity. This is because many Dexterity weapons still require at least a little Strength to equip, as well as the Warrior’s low stats in atonement, Intelligence, and Faith. Naturally, the best use of the Warrior is with builds that combine both Strength and Dexterity, but at lower levels it’s usually better to focus on one or the other first. This class is tied for the lowest combined casting stats among starting classes. This is ideal for min-maxing if you want to make a purely weapon focused character, but is less than optimal if you want anything to do with spells.
Build that uses this class: The Warrior is one of two classes that can pull off the 50 Vitality, 40 Endurance, 40 Strength, 40 Dexterity build at level 125, along with the Bandit. This build is able to use virtually all weapons and has high defense, and can easily handle anything the game or even other players can throw at it.
Knight: Knight is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Low-ranking knight. High HP, solid armor. Not easily toppled.
As far as PvP goes, the Knight is just shy of perfectly optimal for any build. It will always be at least one level short of anything another class could do. This isn’t a game-breaking problem, so long as you don’t mind being ever so slightly weaker than other, more focused builds. As for PvE, the Knight actually has many convenient stats to help a new player along without being too obvious about it. By spending one level in Faith, the Knight is able to cast the Heal, Force, and Seek Guidance miracles which can be bought from Petrus at the Firelink Shrine, all of which are immediately useful to a new player since they boost survivability or otherwise provide assistance. There are also many weapons that require 12 Dexterity or 12 Strength to equip, meaning you’d only need one level in those stats to use them, too. The Knight, along with the Cleric, is one of two classes that start out with the Way of White covenant. This covenant boosts matchmaking with other co-op covenants, which generally results in the player finding more help and being invaded less.
Builds That Use This Class:
The Knight does not have the most optimal stat distribution for any PvP build, and will always be 1-4 levels behind any other build with a better starting class. It is better suited for an odds-and-ends PvE build, where a new player can drop a level or two into a stat to experiment with new things without too much risk.
Wanderer: Wanderer is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Aimless wanderer. Wields scimitar. High dexterity.
While it may appear to be a Dexterity-focused class at first glance, the extra points in Intelligence and Attunement means the Wanderer is better suited for combining sorcery with fast Dexterity weapons than it would be for focusing on any one stat. Great Magic Weapon or Crystal Magic Weapon are the spells to keep in mind here, as are weapons like the Balder Side Sword. Its scimitar and weak shield make starting out with this class a fair bit more difficult than it would be with other ones like the Warrior or Knight.
Builds That Use This Class:
With 50 Vitality, 16 Attunement, 40 Endurance, 40 Dexterity, and 32 Intelligence, the Wanderer can use the powerful Tin Crystallization Catalyst to cast Crystal Magic Weapon on a Balder Side Sword. This is a very powerful setup, which means you should expect your opponent to try dodging and running until your spell wears off. Which is why you have 40 Dexterity, so your weapon still does enough damage even without the buff. That said, if you can manage to hit a fleeing opponent or just find someone overconfident enough to try, you’ll shred them quickly and with little effort.
Thief: Thief is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Guilt-ridden thief with quiet footsteps. High dexterity. Has Master Key by default.
The Thief is generally a very poor choice for both new players and experienced players, with the sole exception of speed runs. Starting out with the Master Key is detrimental to new players since they can easily wind up lost in an end-game area with no way to get out, and experienced players will have little use for the awful stat distribution. For speed runs, however, starting with the Master Key lets them skip much of the game and still have an extra starting gift, and the Bandit Knife does high critical damage which can quickly dispatch strong opponents. The biggest problem with the Thief is its extra stats in all of Attunement, Intelligence, Faith, and Dexterity. There are no spells that use both of Intelligence and Faith in this game, and the only weapon that does requires a tremendously high stat investment in all areas before it even begins to be a better option than literally anything else. In short, if you’re planning to do anything involving PvP or if you want a smooth PvE experience, this isn’t the class for you.
Build that uses this class: None. The Thief’s starting stat distribution is suboptimal for any conceivable build, second only to the Deprived.
Bandit: Bandit is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Savage bandit. High strength. Wields heavy battle-axe.
The Bandit is as straightforward as classes get in Dark Souls. High Vitality, Endurance, and Strength leaves no questions regarding its use. Much like the Warrior, the Bandit is also better for pure Dexterity builds than the classes that start with high Dexterity, due to many Dexterity weapons needing at least a little Strength to equip and use one-handed and the Bandit’s fewer wasted stats in other areas. It is possible to put levels into Faith and Attunement for miracles and Faith-scaling weapons, but the Cleric does Strength+Faith builds better. The Bandit is better off using purely Strength or combining Strength and Dexterity. Build that uses this class: Along with the Warrior, the Bandit is one of two classes that can pull off the 50 Vitality, 40 Endurance, 40 Strength, 40 Dexterity build at level 125. This build is highly versatile and can use a great variety of weapons without giving up anything in defenses, letting it handle just about anything in the game without much effort.
Hunter: Hunter is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Bow-wielding hunter. Can handle close range but vulnerable to magic.
The Hunter is the only class to start with a bow, which gives it an early long-ranged option that the other starting classes won’t have access to… for all of five to ten minutes into the game, when you find a merchant that sells bows and other things. Ironically, despite first appearances this class is actually ever so slightly less suited to pure Dexterity builds than the Warrior or Bandit, due to having one more level in Attunement than either of them. The only time it’s better is if you stay at 12 Strength instead of raising it to 16 Strength, and all that does is reduce the number of Dexterity weapons you could be using. Which is bad, for a so-called Dexterity class.
Build that uses this class: None. Any build the Hunter could use will always be slightly better as some other starting class.
Sorcerer: Sorcerer is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Sorcerer of Vinheim. Dragon school. Casts soul sorceries.
With 15 Attunement and 15 Intelligence, the Sorcerer has exactly one option and that is to cast sorcery. This is the starting class best suited to using sorceries as early as possible, and best suited to builds that use only sorcery and nothing else. This class starts with the lowest Resistance among all classes. This is not actually a good thing, since your starting Resistance does not affect your level in any way, so all it really means is you’ll have slightly less defense compared to other builds of your level.
Build that uses this class: While this class can technically use the same 50 Vitality, 16 Attunement, 40 Endurance, 10 Strength, 40 Dexterity, 32 Intelligence build that the Wanderer can at level 125, it is actually slightly less optimal with it due to the lower Resistance. With 0 Humanity the difference is 5 fewer points in defense, and with 99 Humanity the difference is 1 less point in defense.
As can be expected from a class called the Sorcerer, it is in fact the best for builds focused solely on sorcery or weapons that scale with Intelligence like the Moonlight Greatsword. With 50 Vitality, 16+ Attunement, 40 Endurance, 16 Strength, and 50 Intelligence, you too can be a mighty wizard with magical lasers and a giant sword made of moonlight.
Pyromancer: Pyromancer is a starting Class in Dark Souls.
Great Swamp pyromancy. Casts fire spells. Wields a hand axe.
Despite beginning at level 1, this class is among the stronger starting options in the game due to its early access to pyromancy and good general stat distribution. As long as you intend to have at least a little Attunement for your pyromancies, this class can do anything that doesn’t involve Faith, and can do it well. Keep in mind that even though the Pyromancy Flame may say it scales with Intelligence, pyromancy spell damage does not actually scale with Intelligence, or any stat at all for that matter. That’s only for its melee punch attack, which you shouldn’t be using over other weapons or even Combustion anyways. The best you can do to improve your pyromancy is raising Dexterity to increase your casting speed
Build that uses this class: The Pyromancer is best for builds that use either Strength or Dexterity while still having just a little Attunement for pyromancies. It isn’t unique in this however, since the Wanderer and Sorcerer can both pull off the exact same builds at the exact same levels. The most common such build uses 50 Vitality, 16 Attunement, 40 Endurance, 16 Strength, and 45 Dexterity, with the extra 5 Dexterity over 40 being for casting speed. The Pyromancer can also use 40 Strength instead of 45 Dexterity, but the loss in casting speed is often not worth using a completely different group of weapons for.
While rare and largely pointless, the Pyromancer does have just the right stats to cast abyssal sorceries using minimal Intelligence and only physical scaling with the Demon’s Catalyst, Tin Banishment Catalyst, or Manus Catalyst. With 45 Dexterity and 16 Intelligence, a Tin Banishment Catalyst will deal an unexpectedly high amount of damage with dark sorceries, though not as much as a normal Sorcerer or Dex/Int hybrid would. The only reason this is an option at all is because the standard Pyromancer build can afford the few extra levels in Intelligence, since pyromancy has such low requirements as it is. If the above build were to raise Intelligence to 16 without increasing anything else, it would be level 120.
Cleric: Cleric is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Cleric on pilgrimage. Wields a mace. Casts healing miracles.
As you’d expect, the Cleric is ideal for players that want to use Faith over other stats, or perhaps both Strength and Faith. While lacking in strong offensive miracles early on, the Cleric will have access to plenty of healing and other support tools, making it a good choice for new players. The Cleric is one of two classes that start with the Way of White covenant, along with the Knight. This makes them match more often with other co-op covenants and less often with hostile invasion covenants, making gameplay a little easier for new players who aren’t ready for PvP yet.
Build that uses this class: The Cleric is best suited for builds that focus purely on Faith or combine Strength and Faith. Use 50 Faith for pure Faith, or 30 Faith and 40 Strength for both.
Deprived: Deprived is a starting Class in Dark Souls
Unclothed enigma. Only armed with club and old plank shield.
This class doesn’t start with any special equipment, has an unbelievably awful stat spread, and doesn’t even have the decency to wear pants. Avoid it like the plague, unless you like challenging yourself unnecessarily. Build that uses this class: There is nothing the Deprived can do that other classes can’t do far, far better, and at lower levels to boot.
Storyline:
Dark Souls has a minimalist plot. Historical events in this world and their significance are often implicit and left to player interpretation rather than fully shown or explained. Most of the story is given to the player through dialogue from characters within the game, flavor text from items, and world design. The opening cut scene establishes the premise of the game. The world was once ruled by dragons. In this time period, a man known as Gwyn happens upon an object known as the “First Flame” and finds the “Lord Souls”. He and his allies use their power to defeat the dragons, which starts the Age of Fire. Over time, the flames begin to fade with the rise of humans, and Gwyn sacrifices himself to prolong the Age of Fire. With the flame artificially rekindled, the undead curse begins to plague humanity, causing certain humans to continually resurrect upon death.
The game’s protagonist is known as the chosen undead. After going through Sen’s Fortress, the chosen undead defeats the Iron Golem, and soon enters taken into Anor Londo. The Chosen Undead defeats Dragonslayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough and then enters a throne room of Gwynevere, who gives the chosen undead an object known as the “Lordvessel”. Optionally, the player may encounter Darkstalker Kaathe who encourages the player not to link the fire but to let it die out and usher in the Age of Dark instead. Once the player acquires the Lord Souls, they travel to the Kiln of the First Flame to battle Gwyn. Once Gwyn has been defeated, the player is given the choice of linking the flame to preserve the Age of Fire, or letting it die out to instigate the Age of Dark.
Artorias of the Abyss:
The pack takes the player a hundred years into Dark Souls past, where they must save the land of Oolacile from destruction at the hands of Manus, Father of the Abyss. Artorias of the Abyss received positive reception from critics, who praised the boss battles and added story content, as well as the addition of multiplayer arenas to the game.
At some point in the past, a being known as Manus awoke and began to spread the Abyss. Knight Artorias was sent to stop the spread of the Abyss, but he failed and became corrupted. Meanwhile, Manus searches desperately for his long-lost pendant across space and time. Once the player obtains the pendant, Manus pulls them into the past. There, the player destroys the corrupted Artorias and defeats Manus, halting the spread of the Abyss.
