Introduction:

A quarter-century after nuclear war devastated the earth, a few thousand survivors still cling to existence beneath the ruins of Moscow, in the tunnels of the Metro. They have struggled against the poisoned elements, fought mutated beasts and paranormal horrors, and suffered the flames of civil war. But now, as Artyom, you must flee the Metro and lead a band of Spartan Rangers on an incredible, continent-spanning journey across post-apocalyptic Russia in search of a new life in the East. Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. Explore the Russian wilderness across vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter. Inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro Exodus continues Artyom’s story in the greatest Metro adventure yet.

Game Type:

Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter video game

Game play:

Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter game with survival horror and stealth elements. Set in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the former Russian Federation, the player must cope with the new hazards and engage in combat against mutated creatures as well as hostile humans. The player wields an arsenal of hand-made weapons which can be customized through scavenging materials and a crafting system. The game features a mixture of linear levels and sandbox environments. It also includes a dynamic weather system, a day-night cycle, and environments that change along with the seasons as the story progresses. It will be set over the course of one whole in-game year. Much like previous games in the Metro series, Exodus is a first-person shooter with survival horror and stealth elements – however, it is not quite the same formula, as the experience has been greatly expanded and built upon for even more variation and non-linearity. Since the core teams at both studios have experience from working on S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl, their idea was to combine the mostly linear gameplay of the Metro franchise with the more open-ended nature of Stalker.

Therefore Exodus consists of large sandbox areas tied together by linear underground sections to preserve progression. The developers refer to this as “Sandbox Survival”, highlighting the fact that it is not a fully open world title. The largest areas of Last Light capped out at 200×100 metres, while the regions of Metro Exodus stretch to 2 square kilometres. There are numerous places to explore on the surface, but some irradiated outdoor areas may still require gas masks to be worn for safety. Exodus includes a full weather system with a dynamic day/night cycle (Artyom can rest to pass the time, similarly to how this worked in Far Cry 2). 4A Games has promised no Ubisoft-style fetch quests. Unlike the titles developed by Bethesda, there is no convenient fast travel system here, though Exodus does feature safehouses as well as occasional ziplines to launch the player straight into an activity.

The player can customise Artyom’s wristband with indicators (the nixie watch from Last Light is back as part of this), while the firearms utilised in the game can be modified in five different areas: scopes, barrels, magazines, attachments, and stocks. Artyom can strip the attachments off of the weaponry he finds on his fallen enemies to later apply to his own guns. Plenty of mutants from the older titles in the series return (e.g. the bear), but there are also many new additions (like the humanimal or the wolf) – varying by location and climate. Completely new gameplay mechanics include a map of the sandbox area, a Geiger counter, and binoculars that may be used for analysing the environment. Artyom can now holster his weapons to approach potential hostiles with a less intimidating intent, sometimes even allowing you to bypass combat with other humans entirely. Holstering your gun also bolsters Artyom’s running speed. Some examples of how far the customisation goes this time are the returning Uboinik shotgun and a variant of the Helsing multi-stroke pneumatic air rifle; both have seen some major changes, as the Helsing can be completely converted into a crossbow, while the Uboinik can switch between several magazine types. Similarly, the Revolverserves either the function of a suppressed killing machine with expanded capacity, or a portable hand cannon with fewer rounds, depending on player choice in weapon mods. In fact, unlike prior games where Artyom could only upgrade weapons at set points, firearms can now be modded and customised in the field. Artyom’s armour can be modified as well.

4A Games creative director Andriy “Prof” Prokhorov described Metro Exodus’ structure as almost like an accordion, with every level shrinking or expanding depending on what the story calls for. A scavenging system, somewhat reminiscent of Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, has been implemented; the player can convert the junk and valuables they find in the world into two key resources: chemicals and materials. These resources can then be utilised to craft tools and other items. Workstations will be littered around each map, allowing you to craft ammunition and modify your equipment. This extensive scavenging/crafting system has been put in place to replace the bullet economy of the previous games, which does not apply outside of Moscow. Artyom can now commandeer vehicles, such as rowing a boat across a lake. Quick-time events make another appearance in the gameplay of Exodus, but are used sparingly. Enemy behaviour changes with the time of day and form of environment. The karma system from the previous games is back and has evolved.

Seasons:

The changing seasons (each with its own factions, wildlife, and weather) are an important new feature in Metro Exodus that have a direct effect on how players behave and how NPCs react to the environment.

Winter:

Metro Exodus begins in Moscow, during the harsh winter that fans are already familiar with. The freezing cold is a natural habitat for demons, nosalises, watchmen, and so on. Human bandits can pose a threat too. Winter is still hanging on to this flatland archipelago when the Aurora arrives, but spring begins to dominate as the warm sunlight melts the ice and snow. This region centres on a lift bridge that must be lowered for the armoured train to continue its journey eastwards. Other notable elements of this area include a port, a train depot, and the old church where a cult leader indoctrinates his followers to worship the Tsar Fish. The post-apocalyptic society of the Moscow Metro is formed from a collection of independent stations and powerful Factions. After years of bloody civil war between the fascists of Reich and communists of Redline, Hanza are now the dominant group. They have remained a relatively benign presence, promoting commerce and social freedoms, and are natural allies of the elite Spartan Order, who still strive to maintain peace in the Metro…

  1. RADIATION Everywhere on the surface of Moscow is cloaked in a veil of dangerous radiation. To breathe in this environment, Artyom and the Rangers must wear gas masks at all times on the surface. The Spartan Order had believed that outside of Moscow was just as uninhabitable, until now…

  2. DEMON The Demon, a huge winged beast, is well known to Metro residents as one of the deadliest creatures around. Like a grotesque bird of prey, this creature can grab humans from the ground, and drop them from great heights.

  3. WATCHMAN With protruding joints, fearsome claws and yellowing teeth, the Watchman is one of the most common creatures in post-apocalyptic Moscow. Running in packs, these savage mutants stalk every street and tunnel. A lone Watchman is no match for a trained Spartan, but their sentries can quickly summon reinforcements if not dealt with quickly and quietly…

Spring:

Some zones of post-apocalyptic Russia are arid locations. During the summer we will come across a dried-out, desert area near the Caspian Sea – where rusted cargo ships and submarines litter the sand, while oil pipelines run along vast stretches of the land. Vehicles are useful to move through this region. Sandstorms whip through the area, giving players a dynamic weather element to deal with. The region is controlled by the Munai-bailer, a raider group led by a man known as “The Baron”.

  1. FANATICS Many closed communities have evolved in the wasteland, but few are stranger than the fanatics near the Volga river. Believing all technology has been man’s folly, and only its rejection will bring them salvation, these fanatics, under the watchful eye of their sinister and oddly charismatic leader Silantius, have taken to worshipping a great and powerful beast that lurks beneath the water…

  2. ANOMALY A buzzing blue ball of electric energy, anomalies are an oddity of the post-apocalyptic world. Extremely dangerous to any within a certain radius, these strangely alluring spheres can appear in day or night, but tend to follow a similar path every time.

  3. BANDITS: When there is no hope of ever returning to normal life, it is no surprise that gangs of bandits have sprung up across the wasteland. Ferocious and merciless, those that have cultivated on the banks of Volga river have seemed to have reached a peace between themselves, and have focussed their attentions on terrifying the locals, and robbing them of anything and everything of value.

Summer:

A gorgeous, mountainous, riverside valley that features many elevation changes and a complex system of caves to explore is the region that the Aurora’s crew finds in autumn. There are many man-made wooden fortresses and tree-houses here, as well as a marshland and dam. This zone is mostly controlled by the Children of the Forest, while wolves and bears continue to be a threat. A much less harmful animal that Artyom can come across here is the deer.

  1. FIRE WORSHIPPERS: The Fire Worshippers are the master class in the neo-feudal society of the desert, and they carry themselves with corresponding aplomb and disregard to their opponents’ humanity. Their name comes from the cult of “Holy Flame” created by their leader, The Baron, to keep the enslaved population at bay.

SAND STORMS The desert is an unforgiving environment at the best of times. The unbearable heat, relentless maintenance required to deal with the sand and – if you’re especially unlucky – the storms. These walls of sand reduce visibility and can well prove fatal if cover isn’t found in time.

  1. MUTANTS A timid creature, the Lurkers spend most of their time roaming the surface looking for carrion to feast on. They will avoid combat where possible, often running away at the first sign of trouble. They only attack when in groups or provoked. If you are hunting these you’ll need quick reflexes, they will often attack and then dart for cover in nearby burrows to regroup.

Autumn:

Feel the lovely autumn of the game as you have still to conquer many beasts other than humans so get going,

  1. Children Of The Forest The Children Of The Forest are, essentially, a group of children who became stranded at a scout camp when the war started, and never really got a chance to grow up. Raised by their camp master, who they call “Teacher”, they have adapted to survive in the wilderness against all threats. Be that the changing weather, fierce creatures, bandit attacks or unwelcome guests.

Survival

Being cut off from civilization is a real challenge to your ability to survive. It’s not just the local wildlife and natural hazards that might kill you, but also the lack of resources. Ammunition and supplies are not easy to find here.

  1. Mutants

Wolves Not all beasts roaming the surface are mutants, but unfortunately, as in this case, they can be equally vicious. Ravenous and territorial, wolves should be considered incredibly dangerous. Even a lone wolf can cause problems if not dealt with quickly. However, wolves are pack animals by nature, so if you cross paths with them, you’ll need to have keen wits and good aim to get away unscathed.

The Bear It is said that when encountering a bear in the wild you should remain calm and never run. It goes without saying that this rule does not apply here. The Mutated Bear is a lethal threat to anything that gets close, be it man or beast. Thick bones and tough grisled muscles make it extremely resistant to any kind of firearm save for the heaviest ones, but its thick fur is rather susceptible to incendiary weapons.

Characters:

The main characters of the game are,

  1. Artyom

  2. Anna

  3. Miller

  4. Stepen

  5. Sam

  6. Damir

Artyom Our Protagonist, he said that

“WE WERE NOT BORN FOR LIFE IN THE TUNNELS”

Born in Moscow a few years before the nuclear war, Artyom has lived his entire life in the Metro and on many occasions risked his life to protect it. He is obsessed with the idea of finding life beyond the tunnels of the Metro, regularly venturing outside with a radio transceiver, trying to establish communications with the outside world. He is determined to prove that there is, indeed, life outside the Metro.

Anna The best sniper of the Spartan order and Aytom’s wife

“I want to believe there’s a world out there Artyom…I want to dream.”

Miller’s daughter and Artyom’s wife, Anna is your advisor and will also provide support on missions away from The Aurora. She is regarded as the best sniper amongst the Spartan Rangers, so you can feel at ease with her watching your back. Anna is known for her indomitable attitude, but she still believes in kindness, compromise, and forgiveness, and will advocate for finding a peaceful solution where possible.

Miller: Colonel, Commander of the order and our leader of this journey

“Too many lives have already been sacrificed…”

Colonel Miller lost his legs in the battle for D6, but this hasn’t slowed him down. Equipped with new metal legs, and as stubborn as ever, he is the commander of the Aurora. Always the military figure, he is rational, calculating and often harsh. Mission success is at the top of Miller’s priority list, but he deeply cares for the Spartans whom, along with Anna, he considers his family.

Stepan: Human Tank and Heavy weapon specialist

“Colonel, sir, we can’t just leave them here, they will be eaten alive!”

With years of distinguished service in the ranks of Spartan Rangers, Stepan is part of Miller’s personal retinue. A heavy weapon specialist and one of the strongest fighters on The Aurora, towering at least a head taller than the others, he is someone you’d want by your side in any battle. Rest assured that Stepan’s position will never be overrun by enemies. Despite his size and intimidating appearance, Stepan is a genuine hopeless romantic, and will always try to help out those in need.

Sam: A seasoned fighter and ex US-Marine

“Don’t worry man, everything’s going to be A-OK!”

Before Judgement day, Sam used to guard the US Embassy in Moscow and is now Miller’s personal bodyguard. He is loved by the rest of the team, both for his unending optimism and his combat skills, which are second to none. With Sam protecting The Aurora, you know the base of operations is in safe hands. After learning that the world beyond Moscow is not completely dead, he dreams of one day visiting his homeland.

Damir: Responsible for keeping the team in one piece,

“This is what life’s supposed to be…”

Born in Kazakhstan, Damir has always felt like an outsider in the Rangers. Despite that, he is unwaveringly loyal to Miller and your group. He deeply cares for his comrades and, as your medic for the journey, makes sure everyone gets the attention they need. Going east with the rest of the crew, he hopes to meet some of his relatives on the journey.

Idiot: Don’t judge a book by its cover

“I think your destiny brought you here…”

Idiot chose his own nickname, but is actually one of the most intelligent in the group. Often found despairing about life, its futility and the struggles of men, Idiot is the resident philosopher aboard The Aurora. He is always arguing for careful deliberation before taking any drastic action.

Yermak: The Aurora’s Permanent Helmsman

“This speed is basically nothing for our old gal…”

A train engineer in his previous life, Yermak is one of the few surviving Metro personnel from before the war. When it comes to The Aurora, Yermak knows absolutely everything. From the complex mechanisms of the steam engine right down to the smallest bolt. He will work tirelessly to keep the ‘old gal’ running and make sure you get to your destination. You can be sure of that.

Duke: The youngest of the Spartan’s Rangers

“Please, let me do it, Colonel, Sir!”

One of the youngest aboard The Aurora and recently signed up as a scout in the Rangers, Duke is eager to go on any mission. No matter the danger, he is the first to volunteer. Always testing himself and pushing his limit, often prone to taking risks to ensure the mission is complete. For Duke, this journey is the perfect way to test his own abilities.

Tokarev: A weapons smith and maintenance specialist

“If you put your heart into it, the weapon never fails.”

Need technical expertise? Tokarev is the man you go to. Renowned among the Spartan Rangers, he is responsible for creating many of their weapons and modifications. A man hopelessly in love with his job, he spends most of his time in the workshop aboard The Aurora working on equipment and weapons.

When he’s not making new kit, he has hours of stories to tell… About weapons of course.

Alyosha: Scout Specialist,

“Who knows what adventures lie ahead, my friend?”

Alyosha joined the Spartan Rangers after spending a few years in the Polis Guard, looking for a new adventure. As a scout specialist, he is also the Order’s expert in survival in the ruins of Moscow. He’s ecstatic about the whole journey on The Aurora, and thinks it’s one giant adventure tailor-made for him.

Weapons:

There are lot of weapons that can be used,

  1. Bulldog

  2. Valve

  3. Bastar gun

  4. Shambler shot gun

  5. Helsing

  6. A-shot

Storyline:

Like with the previous games, Dmitry Glukhovsky worked on the scenario of Exodus. The heavily modified steam locomotive used by the main characters is known as the Aurora. Not all of Artyom’s comrades will survive the journey, as 4A promises decisions with consequences as part of a gripping storyline with massive replayability. Since Exodus is set after the events of Metro 2035 (in the year 2036), Artyom is still the protagonist and his partner Anna (Miller’s daughter) plays a part in the game’s plot as a member of Aurora’s crew – the best sniper in the Spartan Order, she is Artyom’s advisor and provides support on missions outside of the Aurora. Some of the events of the third book are canon, in one form or another, in the video game continuity as well, so Artyom and Anna are now a married couple.

Metro Exodus is set after the events of Metro: Last Light, on a post-apocalyptic Earth that has been devastated by a nuclear war.The game continues the story from Metro: Last Light‘s “Redemption” ending. Similar to the previous two entries, the player assumes the role of Artyom who flees the Metro in Moscow and sets off on a continent-spanning journey with Spartan Rangers to the far east. Artyom first travels around the Volga River, not far from the Ural Mountains, to get a ride on a locomotive known as the “Aurora” that heads east for a new life. The story takes place over the course of one year, starting with a harsh nuclear winter in the metro. Another major character, returning from the previous game and the book Metro 2035, is Anna – who is now Artyom’s wife.

They have fled from the metro, leaving Moscow entirely, on a journey to find a new home. The Aurora travels across the country using the Trans-Siberian Railway. In the game we can explore vast stretches of the Russian wilderness, where the air is breathable without the use of filters and the soil may be fertile in some areas; this confirms information already presented to the reader in the Universe of Metro 2033 book series. In an interview with the developers, it was confirmed that the Redemption ending of the previous game is canon. Metro Exodus follows on from this, where Artyom has gathered a group of survivors to leave the metro and embark on a journey. Anna and Miller are some of the familiar returning characters, but there are more. Some of the new characters include: Alyosha, Duke, Tokarev, and Yermak – among others. The Moscow Metro’s bullet economy does not apply outside of the city, but scavenging is still just as if not more important than it was before.

The game’s canon seems to depart from the books in how it presents the character of Miller, who is either a very different character to what he is like in Metro 2035 or has had a huge change of heart.

After the attack on D6 in Metro: Last Light, Artyom becomes disillusioned with the constant infighting and corruption within the Metro and leaves the Spartan Order. He soon becomes obsessed with proving that other human survivors exist outside of Moscow and makes numerous dangerous expeditions to the surface, much to Anna’s concern and Miller’s frustration. However, on one such expedition with Anna, they witness a working train running on the surface. Before they can follow it, they are captured by Hansa soldiers, who have also captured other prisoners who reveal they come from outside of Moscow. The Hansa soldiers execute the outsiders and Artyom is shot and left for dead when he tries to intervene. Surviving the gunshot, Artyom follows the soldiers to their base to rescue Anna, and in the process inadvertently destroys a signal jammer that was blocking all communications going in and out of Moscow. Radio transmissions from all over the world begin being picked up, and Artyom and Anna realize humanity hasn’t gone extinct. Yermak, a train engineer working for the Hansa, agrees to help Artyom and Anna, and the three of them escape by stealing one Hansa’s trains.

As the train leaves, the Spartan Order moves in to retake it and are shocked and confused at Artyom and Anna’s presence, with Anna accusing Miller of being complicit in Hansa’s coverup. Knowing that Hansa will have all of them put to death for knowing the truth, Miller concludes that the Spartans’ best chance of survival is to flee Moscow. Once outside the city, he reveals to the others that while many of Russia’s cities were bombed, the war did not end and NATO proceeded to occupy what was left of the nation. In order to prevent more bombs from being dropped on Moscow, the Russian leadership decided to secretly jam all communications to make the outside world believe nobody had survived. They then receive a radio broadcast from Moscow Defense Command calling for survivors to rally at the “Ark” located at Mount Yamantau and Miller decides to head there, believing that the Ark is where the Russian government has rebuilt itself.

The Spartans proceed to Yamantau, battling bandits and religious fanatics in the process while also picking up additional survivors. They finally reach Yamantau, but quickly discover that the remnants of the Russian government have devolved into cannibals luring survivors in with the false promise of safety. Artyom and the Spartans manage to fight their way out and escape, but Miller’s faith in Russia is shattered and everybody is left wondering what to do next. Using a map they recovered from Yamantau, they decide to travel to a satellite communication center near the Caspian Sea in the hopes of gaining access to a satellite to find habitable land to settle. At the dried up remains of the Caspian Sea, the Spartans steal much needed water and fuel from the local bandits and free their slaves while obtaining an updated satellite map.

As the Spartans continue on their journey, Anna begins to cough up blood, fearing the cause was accidentally breathing poison gas during the journey. They decide to scout a nearby forest valley to see if it is suitable to settle. While scouting the forest, Artyom is caught between two rival survivor factions who are both terrorized by a giant mutant bear called the Master of the Forest. However, he also discovers that the dam protecting the valley from radiation is on the verge of failing, making the area unsuitable to settle. Artyom is able to defeat the Master of the Forest and return to the train, but Anna’s condition has worsened. The only chance to save Anna is to find the antidote in Novosibirsk, but the entire city is heavily irradiated.

Miller and Artyom decide to head into the city alone to search for the antidote despite the risk. They enter the Novosibirsk metro and find a young boy named Kiril, one of the last of the Novosibirsk survivors. Kiril explains that his father left on a mission to obtain a map marking the location of a clean, habitable area. Miller decides to go find the map while Artyom heads out to find the antidote. However, as he proceeds deeper into the city, he begins experiencing vivid hallucinations. Artyom manages to recover the antidote, but is gravely wounded by a mutant and absorbs a heavy dose of radiation. Artyom, Miller, and Kiril return to the train with the map and the antidote, but Miller dies of radiation poisoning on the way back. The rest of the Spartans donate their own blood to give Artyom a critical blood transfusion. Anna is cured with the antidote and with the map, the Spartans settle on the shores of Lake Baikal, which is free from radiation. However, Artyom’s ultimate fate depends on the choices he made during the journey.

In the bad ending, Artyom dies from the radiation poisoning, and the Spartans and a grieving Anna hold a funeral for him and Miller. In the good ending, Artyom manages to survive. Miller is buried and Artyom is selected to take his place as leader of the Spartan Order. Now that they have a home, Artyom decides that it is time to search for other survivors.
